Ishwori Devi Neupane has been elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives.

Neupane was elected unopposed as she was the only candidate to file nomination for the post.

Harka Rai, Secretary at the House of Representatives, said that only Ishwori Devi Neupane filed her candidacy within the stipulated time.

Ramhari Khatiwada proposed Neupane’s nomination while Krishna Gopal Shrestha seconded the proposal.

A meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee has been called for 3 pm tomorrow.

The Parliament Secretariat stated that Neupane will be announced as the Chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in the same meeting.

More than 1,000 supporters of Sri Lanka’s former president Ranil Wickremesinghe protested his arrest in Colombo on Tuesday ahead of a crucial hearing to decide whether to grant bail to the senior opposition politician accused of misusing public funds during his presidency, Associated Press reported.

Wickremesinghe, who was president from 2022 to 2024, was arrested last Friday over accusations of using public funds to attend his wife’s graduation ceremony in London after an official visit to the United States in 2023. The court ordered him to be detained until Tuesday’s hearing. 

Wickremesinghe’s arrest has caused uproar with opposition lawmakers and politicians claiming it is a political witch hunt that undermines the country’s democracy.

On Tuesday, supporters and opposition activists gathered on the main streets leading to the Magistrates’ Court in protest, according to Associated Press.

Bones, likely to be human, have been recovered at a wartime undersea mine in western Japan where about 180 mostly Korean forced laborers died in an accident in 1942, according to a Japanese civil group helping in the search for their remains, Associated Press reported.

Three possible limb bones and a skull were found in the past two days by Korean divers at the former site of the Chosei Mine in Yamaguchi prefecture, according the group known as Kizamu Kai. 

The bones were to be examined by local police to determine whether they belong to any of the victims who died at the mine 83 years ago.

If confirmed, the discovery is expected to accelerate efforts to recover other remains of the 136 Korean forced laborers and 47 Japanese workers killed in the mine collapse, according to Associated Press.

Bheri Hospital is all set to provide dialysis services for free of cost to the needy people who also suffer from the diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson and seropositive.

The people with such health issues and also in want of dialysis service would be provided it freely. The hospital made public a list of the people who could access this treatment. 

The scheme was launched as per the project directive on treatment of the destitute. 

The Nursing and Social Security Division under the Department of Health Service had introduced the scheme.

Medical superintendent at Bheri Hospital, Dr Nirajan Subedi, informed that the people suffering from Hepatitis B and HIV are termed as the seropositive ones. Such patients would be entitled to the treatment costing as high as Rs 300, 000 for dialysis in a year.  

With this scheme in place, the people facing financial problems to treat kidney disease would get huge relief. 

The service begins on Wednesday, Dr Subedi informed. 

The hospital is also making homework to finalize the list of the people who would be entitled to the kidney transplantation and peritoneal dialyses.

Indian exporters are bracing for disruptions after a U.S. Homeland Security notification confirmed Washington would impose an additional 25% tariff on all Indian-origin goods from Wednesday, ramping up trade pressure on the Asian nation, Reuters reported.

Indian exports will face U.S. duties of up to 50% - among the highest imposed by Washington - after President Donald Trump announced extra tariffs as punishment for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.

The new duties will apply to goods entering the U.S. for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses for consumption from 12:01 a.m. EDT on Wednesday or 9:31 a.m. IST, according to the Homeland Security notice.

The Indian rupee weakened 0.2% to 87.75 per U.S. dollar in early trade, even as the greenback declinedagainst many other currencies. The benchmark equity indexesand were each trading 0.7% lower, according to Reuters.

More Palestinian families left Gaza City on Tuesday after a night of Israeli shelling on its outskirts, as Israelis launched a day of nationwide protests calling for hostages to be released and the war in Gaza to end, Reuters reported.

Residents said Israeli aerial and tank shelling continued throughout the night and early on Tuesday in the eastern Gaza City suburbs of Sabra, Shejaia, and Tuffah, as well as in Jabalia town to the north, destroying roads and houses.

"Earthquakes, we call it, they want to scare people to leave their homes," said Ismail, 40, a Gaza City resident.

The Israeli military has said its forces are operating in the area to locate weapons and destroy tunnels used by militants. The first human case of a flesh-eating parasite infestation has been confirmed in the US, authorities say, BBC reported.

New World screwworm (NWS) myiasis was found in a patient who returned to the US from El Salvador, the Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday. The case was confirmed on 4 August.

NWS myiasis is a parasitic infestation of fly larvae, or maggots, caused by parasitic flies, according to BBC.

The pest primarily affects livestock, and authorities have said the risk to US public health was currently "very low".

Botswana has declared a public health emergency as it faces a shortage of essential medicines and medical equipment, BBC reported.

President Duma Boko made the announcement in a televised address on Monday, setting out a multimillion-dollar plan to rectify the supply chain involving military oversight. 

Managing the shortages would be "highly price sensitive due to our limited coffers", he told the nation.
