Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava is completing his four-year tenure in Kathmandu. He assumed charge as the Ambassador of India to Nepal on June 25, 2022. Having joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1993, Srivastava began his diplomatic career in Hong Kong. During his four-year tenure in Nepal, he played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a farewell meeting, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal congratulated Ambassador Srivastava on the successful completion of his tenure, appreciating his efforts to further deepen the multifaceted ties of Nepal–India relations.
One of the major achievements made during his tenure was robust energy cooperation between the two countries, including a long-term agreement to export 10,000 MW of electricity to the Indian market. Similarly, he played a vital role in enabling Nepal’s electricity exports to Bangladesh. Recently, he took prompt steps to increase electricity imports from India to help Nepal avoid potential power cuts during the winter season.
During his meeting with Srivastava, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai acknowledged the Ambassador's active role in achieving significant progress in energy, cross-border infrastructure, and people-to-people connectivity.
Following the 2025 Gen Z movement, the Indian Ambassador played a vital role in helping bring the democratic process back on track. He actively encouraged Nepal’s political parties to participate in the March 5 elections, emphasizing that elections were the primary way to restore constitutional order. India subsequently provided political, diplomatic, and logistical support to Nepal's electoral process.
Similarly, following the recent Bhote Koshi flood, Ambassador Srivastava was actively involved in ensuring swift support for Nepal’s rescue and relief efforts, with Indian assistance arriving the very day the flood struck. Political leaders noted that throughout his tenure, he maintained cordial ties across the political spectrum, refrained from making controversial statements, and tactfully managed bilateral irritants.
A leader from an opposition party remarked, "He did not deliver political statements regarding the internal affairs of the country, making his tenure a notable success." During his tenure, he prioritized expanding the scope of economic and developmental collaboration with Nepal.
