India Flags Off First Hydrogen-Powered Train, Marking Major Step Towards Green Rail Transport

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant milestone in the country's journey towards cleaner and more sustainable railway transportation. The pilot project will operate on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana under Northern Railway.

The launch makes India one of a select group of countries to introduce hydrogen fuel cell technology in railway operations. Unlike conventional diesel-powered trains, the new train generates electricity through hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water vapour as a by-product and significantly reducing carbon emissions. The project also includes dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling infrastructure to support operations.

Ahead of the launch, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significance of the initiative in a post on X, stating that India has joined the league of nations operating hydrogen-powered trains and that the project will accelerate the adoption of clean technology in the railway sector.

Developed as a pilot project, the hydrogen-powered train is expected to evaluate the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology for wider deployment across the Indian Railways network. The initiative aligns with India's broader goals of promoting green mobility, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and achieving sustainable transportation.

Key Features of the Hydrogen-Powered Train

  • 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell-based trainset.
  • Powered by a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.
  • Approved operational speed of 75 kmph, with a design speed of 110 kmph.
  • Passenger capacity of approximately 2,600.

The successful operation of the pilot project could pave the way for the introduction of more hydrogen-powered trains across the country, strengthening India's commitment to environmentally friendly and energy-efficient public transport.
