World soccer's governing body FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics ​prosecutor to investigate the post-match brawl that erupted after Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in a chaotic World Cup ​final, Reuters reported. 

Tensions boiled over after Spain secured ​their second World Cup title courtesy ⁠of an extra-time winner from winger ​Ferran Torres. Argentina had already been reduced ​to 10 men in the 93rd minute of normal time when Enzo Fernandez was sent ​off for a second yellow ​card.

After what may have been his final World Cup match, Lionel Messi was in tears on the field Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., ruing a missed chance to win ​a second consecutive title for Argentina, Reuters reported. 

Messi, without hinting whether his World Cup career was officially through, congratulated Spain and said the memories will last in an Instagram post Monday.

"The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal," Messi wrote in his native Spanish alongside a ​photo of him bearing a silver medal. "But I also hold onto all the good ​things... The matches we turned around by giving it our all--moments that ⁠will remain in our memories forever--and the support of an entire country which, combined with ​this group's hard work and effort, brought us back among the world's elite once again. ​It is hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals," according to Reuters. 

Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has died at the age of 75, his former club Newcastle United said on Monday, Reuters reported. 

Keegan's family and Newcastle announced in January that the two-time European Footballer of the Year was undergoing cancer treatment, ​without disclosing details of his illness.

Indian badminton player PV Sindhu became the first Indian to claim the title by winning the Japan Open 2026 and has achieved a milestone for Indian badminton. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated and praised her for the determination and exceptional skill in the tournament.

In a post on X, PM Modi described the victory as ‘a historic feat for Indian badminton,’ stating that Sindhu’s resilience and outstanding performance were evident in every match. He highlighted that becoming the first Indian to win the Japan Open makes the achievement even more special.

Sindhu’s achievement has strengthened her legacy as one of India’s most accomplished badminton players and is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes.
